Captain Gibbs, known as “Denny” to family and friends, passed away on January 30, 2003 after a courageous two-year battle with job-related cancer. He dedicated 29 years of service to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, spending the final decade with the department’s Hazardous Materials Response Unit. Denny loved being a firefighter and often said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. His passion for the job inspired both his son, Gary, and grandson, Danny, who continued his legacy as members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Captain Gibbs is survived by his wife, Donna, and their two children, Lynn and Gary.

Firefighter Wilbern passed away on January 19, 2003, at the age of 46. Firefighter Wilbern last served at Fire Station 77 in the city of Gorman.

Firefighter Allen assed away on October 6, 2002, at the age of 41. He was last assigned to Fire Station 124.

Firefighter Thomas passed away on February 9, 2000, at the age of 50. Firefighter Thomas last served at Fire Station 119 in Rowland Heights.

Firefighter Kingsland passed away on March 16, 1999 at the age of 59. He was last assigned to Fire Station 125.

Firefighter Alcala passed away on March 8, 1999, at the age of 49. He was last assigned to Fire Station 68.

Firefighter Russell passed away on November 19, 1998 at the age of 63. He was last assigned to Fire Station 15 in Whittier.

Firefighter Williams passed away on November 5, 1997, at the age of 52.

Captain Kenneth Bayer passed away on September 9, 1997, three days after suffering a heart attack while battling a house fire in Calabasas. He served the Department with dedication and distinction for 28 years.
